JOB DESCRIPTION: Student Assistant Specialist(SAS)
Primary Function:
● The Student Assistant Specialist (SAS) promotes and enhances the overall academic mission by providing services that strengthen home/school/community partnerships and alleviate barriers to learning.
● The Student Assistant Specialist significantly contributes to the development of a healthy, safe and caring environment by advancing the understanding of the emotional and social development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences on student success and by implementing effective intervention strategies.
Qualifications:
● Endorsed as School Social Worker or School Counselor or hold a Master's of Social Work
● Valid Virginia driver’s license
● Knowledge of Continuum of Special Education programs and service options
● Ability to prepare clear and concise written documents and to make oral presentations
● Good communication skills and the wiliness/ability to work with all who are involved in the student’s education
Reports to: Building Principal/Administrator and MH Coordinator
Performance Responsibilities:
● Assessment of Student, Family and School Needsv- Effectively and appropriately assess and address the needs, characteristics and interactions of students, families, local education agency (LEA) personnel and community.
● Direct Services/Service Delivery
● Use knowledge and understanding of the reciprocal influences of home, school, and community to intervene for student success via such practices as:
○ Participate in caseload management planning to coordinate resources for appropriate and timely completion of assessment and placement assignments
○ Conduct comprehensive reviews of referrals received for special education evaluation to ascertain completeness of all required elements, including documentation of prior interventions
○ Ensure that all information regarding all changes in student status, e.
g.
, enrollment and discharges are accurately maintained in the student information system
○ Ensure that the appropriate bilingual services are provided during the referral, evaluation and placement approved for students who are English Language Learners (ELLs)
○ Assist the Eligibility Chairperson in implementing a plan to complete evaluations for non-public school caseloads, as well as for the hearing impaired and visually impaired students
○ Obtain and provide a written report of socio-cultural information for children who are referred for special education assessments (for eligibility meetings)
○ Assist schools with issues concerning student academic and behavioral performance in school
○ Serve on the Child Study Chairperson Team for difficult cases
● Advocacy - Advocates for appropriate services for students and their families
● Consultation and Collaboration - On behalf of students and their families, consult and collaborate with outside agencies to arrange appropriate programs and services to meet the needs of eligibility students
● Program Planning, Implementation and Evaluation - Effectively plan, implement, and evaluate programs that promote student and family success
● Accountability - Advocate, facilitate, and contribute to school social work accountability for outcomes aligned with Local Education Association, State Education Association, and federal policies and guidelines (IDEA).
Terms of Employment: Conditions of employment to be established by HR and the Franklin County School Board.
Evaluation: Performance on this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations which address evaluation of certified personnel.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $47,500.
