gov Recruitment Type: General Public - G Job Duties This wage/hourly position works for the Salem District signs and pavement marking unit.
Position installs and maintains pavement markings and messages in compliance with the MUTCD, Virginia Work Area Protection Manual, and Road and Bridge Specifications.
Installs and maintains ground mounted and overhead signs and other traffic control devices in compliance with the MUTCD.
Follows guidelines and policies governing Miss Utility clearances for sign installations.
Interprets roadway plans and sketches for new sign installation.
Prepares and operates equipment for snow and ice removal or other emergency operations.
Provides traffic control.
Determines and demonstrates proper work site protection techniques.
Identifies workplace safety hazards and makes suggestions for improvement.
Wears proper personal protection equipment.
Maintains current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws, and procedures.
Follows VDOT safety regulations and practices.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is key to fulfilling this agency requirement, and this position will be called upon to work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations such as inclement weather, flooding, and/or traffic incidents.
THIS IS AN HOURLY/WAGE POSITION AND IS NOT ENTITLED TO STATE BENEFITS PACKAGE AND IS LIMITED TO AN AVERAGE OF 29 HOURS PER WEEK, AND 1500 OURS IN A 12-MONTH PERIOD.
Minimum Qualifications •Skill in the operation and maintenance of specialty equipment and complex machinery used in pavement marking and messaging.
•Knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding traffic control devices.
Working knowledge of work zone traffic control standards and techniques.
•Ability to read and interpret plans and sketches.
Knowledge of sign installation standards.
•Knowledge of material characteristics.
Skill in the use and maintenance of hand and power tools, as well as light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
•Experience performing manual labor activities.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
•Ability to read and interpret work plans and specifications, and complete accurate work documentation.
•Ability to lead the work of others.
•Ability to obtain Commercial Drivers License (CDL) and medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
Additional Considerations •Experience installing pavement messages and markings (both preformed thermo plastic and painted).
•Experience installing and maintaining highway signs (metal and wood structures).
•Experience in emergency operations, including snow and ice removal, and storm and debris clean-up.
•Experience using Windows-based computer programs.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.
Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.
Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel independently among assigned work locations is required.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM.
Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
