JOB The City of Roanoke is seeking a Maintenance Technician I to perform work on a Turf and Landscape Crew.
The successful candidate will engage in a variety of turf maintenance activities throughout the City Rights-of-Way (ROW) and responsible for adhering to an established mowing cycle.
They must have knowledge of and ability to skillfully operate and do routine daily service and maintenance on a wide variety of equipment including Ventrac, zero-turn and walk-behind mowers, string trimmers, edgers and leaf blowers; perform semi-skilled landscape maintenance including minor tree pruning, aerating, overseeding, mulching, turf renovations and other landscape maintenance duties as needed; and operate heavy and light equipment for snow removal.
Must be able to obtain a valid Class B CDL license with air brake and tanker endorsements within 6 months of employment.
May be required to obtain a Registered Technician Pesticide License and a Fertilizer Applicator Certification within 12 months.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES SUMMARY Performs skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and/or equipment and in the operation of motorized equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following depending on the area of assignment.

Operates street sweeper, excavator, bulldozer, front-end loader and other medium to heavy equipmentMakes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and soddingOperates cranes, large motor grader in leveling ground surfaces, street and construction repairsPerform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties in the operation and maintenance of a closed-circuit television unit designed for stormwater infrastructure inspections.
Gather and report work site information from inspectionsPerforms tasks such as pesticide application and asphalt levelingServices and makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipmentOperates all equipment, both light and heavy in snow removalPaints walls and materials from surface preparation to application and finishing Performs minor repair of buildings, doors, windows and floors, locks, cabinets, and similar items Uses and maintains spray painting and lawn care equipment for maintaining athletic fieldsWhen not operating equipment, performs general laboring tasks such collecting and removing trash and debris from city propertiesAssists with event support, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as neededMay be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity.
May require some experience and knowledge of computer graphic software and equipment used for fabrication and installation of signs and markings.
May supervise crew in absence of supervisorMay be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their dutiesSUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES May supervise a small crew.
May supervise crew in the absence of Maintenance Technician III or Maintenance Technician IV.
