Position: Laborer
Report to: General Supervision / Site Foreman
Job Description Overview
Team members classified in a laborer position shall assist in the safe completion of a variety of tasks associated with heavy construction, underground utilities construction, and environmental construction.
Following a familiarization of safety procedures and a thorough review of each tool’s user manual, the laborer may operate small power and hand tools, including but not limited to tampers, saws, straw blowers, seeders, surveying and measuring devices, concrete tools, pumps and compressors.
Safety training by the company will be required for all team members.
Out of town work is probable and may require travel of up to three weeks away from home at a time.
Dependable attendance and punctuality are critical.

Wage & Benefits $25.
25/hour with 90-day and annual evaluations.
Weekly pay.
40 – 60 hours a week.
Overtime pay (time and a half) after 40 hours.
Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Hospital Confinement, Accident and Critical Illness insurance coverages begin on 61st day of employment.
401k with 4% match.

Responsibilities Ensures adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
Successfully masters safety training and completes hazard recognition; the daily Stop, Look, Assess, and Manage (SLAM) Booklet; and Task Hazard Analysis (THA) forms.
Knows the safety procedures and performs thorough reviews of the operator/user manuals prior to operating any power tools or equipment.
Cleans and prepare construction site to eliminate possible hazards.
Signals equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials.
Trenches and backfills excavations and compacts and levels earth to grade specifications using shovels, picks, rakes, and tampers.
Positions, aligns, joins, and seals structural components, such as concrete structures, pipe, and culverts.
Accurately measures, marks, and records openings and distances as may be required for record drawings.
Loads, unloads, and identifies materials and tools and distributes them to the appropriate location.
Sets up traffic control zones, barricades, signage, ramps, and other temporary safety devices as deemed necessary by the site safety plan.
Assists in seed bed preparation and mulching of seeded areas by means of engine powered straw blowers or by hand if necessary.
Labors to assist in the installation of erosion control measures on environmental projects.
Performs/assists with SWPPP inspections as required.
A valid CDL is preferred for this position.
Progression Team members in the laborer position will be evaluated and placed into one of five classification levels.
Laborers will progress through the classification levels as skills and expertise grow.
A performance review will be conducted, at a minimum, annually.
Progression to a higher pay classification requires attainment of the previous classification’s skills and abilities, a positive annual performance review, and compliance with the guidelines established in the Kwest Group Team Member Handbook.
Out-of-cycle reviews may occur as deemed appropriate by the foreman, superintendent, and general superintendent.
Laborer E—minimum laborer abilities: Safely operates small tools, including, but not limited to a cutoff saw, a walk behind saw, a chain saw, a hammer drill, a jack hammer, a plate-tamp, a jumping jack, pumps (electric and gas), generators, compressors, a straw blower, a hydro seeder, a rototiller, and a pressure washer.
Installs erosion and sediment controls, such as silt sock, silt fence, and safety fence.
Identifies overhead obstruction and addresses them using flag lines or some other method to identify them.
Understands and correctly performs the duties required for the spotter program.
Understands and correctly performs duties required for work zone traffic control.
Laborer D—proficiency of Laborer E abilities plus: Identifies underground utilities: gas lines, water lines, sewer lines, storm sewer, and power lines.
Sets and installs per plan grade pipe and structure installation, including manholes, headwalls, and outlet structures.
Identifies and addresses confined space areas.
Laborer C—proficiency of Laborer E and D abilities plus: Recognizes the different types of pipe—RCP, SDR 35 sewer pipe, C900 - 909 plastic pipe, ductal pipe, and HDPE—and can install them properly.
Operates a skid steer, front end loader, roller, agricultural tractor, water truck, ATV/UTV, and off-road dump truck at the minimum proficiency level.
Laborer B—proficiency of Laborer E, D, and C abilities plus: Understands how to set up GPS, orbital laser, pipe laser, and line tool and establish grades off the benchmark.
Correctly reads and interprets drawings and prints to include job layout.
Laborer A—proficiency of Laborer E, D, C, and B abilities plus: Manages subcontractors while the foreman and/or crew leader is unavailable.
Understands the job site and manages the job while the foreman and/or crew leader is unavailable.
Education and Qualifications Will be required to pass a pre employment drug screening, and if offered a position, any random drug screening if randomly Must attend all mandatory safety meetings and participate in discussions with the work crew and any safety personnel on Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required.
The average work week would consist of 5 ten-hour days, but schedule will be dictated by project Must be able to work out of town, sometimes out of state, and for lengths of time, such as the job would Must be over 18 to operate power-driven saws including chain saws, woodchippers, abrasive cutting disks, or other power-driven equipment, or to perform excavating operations.
Working Conditions Travel from site to site will be required.
Work environment will normally be an active construction site.
Exposure to dust, noise, high heat, extreme cold, and rain should be expected.
Employee must be physically able to perform repetitive motion and heavy lifting, as described below.
Must be able to maintain effective audio and visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned Physical Demands Must wear all employer-mandated personal protective equipment, including hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, safety vests, and safety-toed work boots.
Other PPE may be required from time to time depending on special safety concerns.
All PPE will be provided by the company at no cost to the employee, other than safety Must be able to hear with or without the use of a hearing device and clearly see at least 30 feet with or without the use of corrective vision Must be able work while wearing a respirator if Alternate standing and walking on uneven terrain surfaces, such as hillsides, muddy and icy soils, and other working surfaces.
Safe negotiation of all types of surface conditions will always be required.
Bending, squatting and kneeling will be required frequently during a work day.
Continual lifting of up to 50 lbs.

Within one year, employee must be able to obtain OSHA 30-hour status.
