GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs responsible technical work involving the multidisciplinary inspection of residential, public facilities, and storm water systems for mechanical, electrical, gas, plumbing, building construction, and/or erosion and sediment control devices to ascertain compliance with codes, ordinances, regulations and approved plans.
Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Inspects residential and commercial building construction to ensure that building construction and the installation of mechanical heating, ventilation and airconditioning systems, electrical systems, and plumbing are performed in compliance with the applicable codes.
Maintains as-built records.
Inspects erosion and sediment control measures to enforce Roanoke County‘s Erosion and Sediment Control Ordinance.
Maintains as-built records.
Inspects assigned areas for noncompliance and enforcement of all codes and department regulations.
Investigates complaints regarding new construction, unpermitted construction and modifications to existing structures by researching and analyzing the code complaint to determine its merits, reporting the findings, and requiring corrective action when necessary.
Interprets the applicable codes and keeps abreast of code modifications in applicable certifications.
Review residential and commercial construction documents that are submitted to the Roanoke County Department of Building Safety.
REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES
Education
Required: Education equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by college courses in engineering.
Experience
Required: Three (3) or more years' experience as a building or construction inspector as well as one (1) or more years' plan review experience.
Certifications/ Licenses
Required:
Certification as an Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector, and two (2) or more of the following certifications: Residential Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, or Electrical Inspector; Commercial Building, Plumbing, Mechanical or Electrical inspector issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.
Virginia Certification as a Combination 1&2 Family Dwelling is required within 18 months of hiring and Virginia Certification as a Combination Inspector General is required within 36 months of hiring date.
Valid Virginia driver's license with good driving record.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the theories and practices of the National, State and County mechanical, electrical, plumbing, gas and building codes and regulations.
General Knowledge of equipment and materials used in the repair, alteration and/or construction of buildings
Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, plumbing, gas and building plans, specifications, blueprints and drawings
Ability to analyze and resolve field problems
Ability to sketch and keep good records
Ability to use sound judgment in making independent decisions
Ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous relationships with builders, contractors, the public and fellow employees.
Ability to prepare reports and correspondence.
Additional Requirements
Subject to a complete criminal background search with acceptable history results.

Following a conditional offer of employment, must pass a post offer physical examination.
