On-the-job/cross-training opportunities Encouraging and collaborative team environment Dedication to safety through our Zero Harm policy What you will do: The Mechanical Engineer is a key member of the Synchrony Engineering team and supports the design and development of the mechanical portion of an active magnetic bearing (AMB) system.
The mechanical system includes radial bearings, thrust bearings, and instrumentation.
We may request you to design assemble and test tooling.
This engineering function has significant interaction with the controls and software functions to ensure the acceptable design of the AMB system.
How you will do it: Maintain a safe working environment and a commitment to safety excellence.
Develop physical models (analytical and/or computational) of components/devices in support of new product designs.
Develop physical models (analytical and/or computational) of existing production components/devices to improve current products.
Develop/perform experimental programs to provide feedback to the aforementioned physical models.
Regularly communicate pertinent results with engineering staff, customers, and other stakeholders.
Maintain appropriate records of work performed on development programs.
Maintain adherence to JCI and Synchrony applicable product design and development procedures.
Specify and select tools (computational and/or experimental) in collaboration with other Engineering staff in order to improve current and/or future research programs.
Support the manufacturing team and/or assembly technicians as requested or needed.
Participate in cross-functional teams that manage projects from concept through proof of principle and potentially through a first article manufacturing process.
Solve difficult problems at the engineering and production levels.
Assist with appropriate testing utilizing company procedures and methodology and other experimental design tools and generate test reports.
Contribute to the intellectual property position of the company via invention and patent applications.
Interface with existing and new customers.
Help resolve problems associated with returned materials.
What we look for: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
2-5 years experience in a product development environment or an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Mechanical Engineering.
3+ years’ experience using 3D modeling software to design parts for fabrication and assembly (SolidWorks preferred.
) Design of active magnetic, rotating element, or other forms of mechanical bearings.
Familiarity with the design and/or operation of high-speed motors Design and/or operation of other products with high-speed rotating shafts such as turbomachinery A combination of both R&D and manufacturing experience is strongly preferred.
Experience designing assemblies consisting of both mechanical and electrical/electronic components.
Skills Possess working knowledge of GD&T or be able to learn as part of OJT.
Be able to independently perform basic research of background information that is relevant to a research program.
Be able to learn how to utilize new design tools (e.
g.
, software packages, experimental equipment).
Possess a high proficiency in basic office and data analysis software (e.
g.
, MS Word, Excel, etc.
).
Be able to use basic shop tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, micrometers, etc.
Physical Demands Employee may be on his/her feet for extended periods of time.
Employee should be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds unassisted.
Be able to use hands for assembly and tool usage.
Not have known allergies or issues related to handling metals including aluminum, copper, bronze, and steel.
